Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua has been outside the U.S. for two weeks, and until Sunday were unknown when he would return to his duties.

While some city officials said they would be back in time for the Battle of the annual city budget, critics pounced on him not to announce or explain his long absence.

"That's not leadership," said Councilman Mark LaPlante the Boston Herald. "It's supposed to present the budget at Tuesday's meeting. I hope he's there. "

Frank Moran explained that Lantigua, who has been out of Lawrence since 10 May, called it a day before going to the Dominican Republic. Moran explained that the mayor traveled to their country because of the death of his girlfriend's father. He also reported that Lantigua's father is in a difficult medical condition and may die at any moment.

When the mayor is absent for three days in the city, the president of the Council must play its role.
The city attorney said the mayor "is not required to notify anyone" and that the transfer of power is automatic when the mayor has been out for three days straight. However, he said he hopes that Lantigua is back before Tuesday.
